In apartments/condos, it's not uncommon to witness a couch, table, or desk being hoisted into a window or balcony by use of a rope. This is a rather regular sight. Why? Because of the stairs and the cramped quarters. When looking for your first apartment, room should be one of your top priorities. Even if you get lucky and find rooms that are bigger than average, the stairwell or elevator that leads to your new home probably won't be able to fit your huge furniture due to the financial constraints mentioned before. For example, a massive sectional couch is not the kind of hand-me-down that is wanted. Even while it can be good to have a free couch, it won't be of any use if it's still sitting on the front yard once moving day is through. It's possible that the first apartment just has a couple beautiful desk chairs rather than a single large couch.
